To become a taxi driver in Tromsø Taxi, you must pass our driver course.

Fitness and suitability will be assessed during the course, and we reserve the right to end the course without being awarded a driver's license.

The course is held in the evening over 3 days and lasts approximately 15 hours in total. The course concludes with a course exam and appraisal test.

Topics covered during the course include knowledge about the use of taximeters, culture and attitudes in Tromsø Taxi AS, expectations of the profession and the driver as a service employee.

Course fee of kr. 3500,- is payable to Tromsø Taxi upon registration.

Please note that the training does not automatically lead to employment in the company. However, completed and passed training provides very good job opportunities in the company. Completed education has a validity of 2 years.

Mandatory language test

All applicants who are not native speakers of Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish) must take the Norwegian B1 test before starting the course. At level B1, you can understand clear and relatively simple language and express yourself clearly and coherently about work, school, leisure and current social issues. You can cope with most everyday conversations and write simple texts on familiar topics with brief explanations.

The Norwegian test is divided into four sub-tests. These sub-tests are: reading test, listening test, writing test and oral test (speaking). You can read more about the Norwegian test here.

We carry out the language mapping to clarify the language level, and to see if applicants meet the language requirement to become a taxi driver in Tromsø Taxi.

Before you can start driving, you must have passed the public driver's exam at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and have been issued a driving license by the police. You can read more about driving licenses further down this page.

Requirements for taxi drivers in Tromsø Taxi

• You must have a valid driving license for paid passenger transport.
• You must complete all modules in Tromsø Taxi's own driver course (absence will result in you having to take a new course).
• You must pass the tax collector test on our driver course.
• You must be fluent in spoken Norwegian at a minimum level of B1 according to the European Framework for Languages. A compulsory language test must be completed before a course place is awarded.
• You must have lived in Norway for 4 years if you are a foreign citizen. The residence requirement does not apply if you are from an EEA country.
• Tromsø Taxi's uniform regulations require that all drivers purchase uniforms in accordance with the established agreement. Once you have passed the course, you buy a uniform package from us for NOK. 1300,-. The uniform package includes a uniform shirt, uniform jacket and uniform sweater + driver card (ID card for logging into the taximeter).
• You must be fit and proper for the profession, cf. the Professional Transport Act § 37 f, 1st paragraph. You will learn about this on the driver course.
• Relevant experience, education or expertise is desirable.

At the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, you must take a theory test. From March 20, 2024, there is no longer a requirement for a practical test (taxi driving). You must take the theory test in Norwegian and answer 85 percent of the questions correctly to pass. The test consists of 35 questions that you must answer in 60 minutes. The tasks may consist of questions, incomplete sentences that you must complete, or statements that you must consider. Once you have passed the theory test, you will receive a certificate of competence for taxi drivers.

A driver's license is a confirmation that a driver meets specific requirements for good conduct and health. All professional drivers must have a driving license, and this must be updated at least every 10 years.

The police have the following requirements for driving licenses:

• You must be at least 20 years old and have had a driving license for at least two consecutive years.
• You must be in good health and enclose a health certificate with your application.
• You must be of good character (behavior). The police check the integrity of all applicants.
• You must document that you have sufficient professional competence. You can document this with a certificate of competence for taxi drivers , which you can obtain from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, or with the YSK for passenger transport.

If you have a YSK for passenger transport, you can apply for a driving license without having taken a theory test from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
